The exhaustion set in soon after I put my clothes back on. I had finally come down entirely from the intoxicated state I had been in, and my muscles—among other areas on my body—were aching from the unholy activities I had just participated in.

Alex stayed in his room, and when I made my way back upstairs, Damien was relaxing on the couch watching TV. “I think I need a shower again,” I muttered. I wondered if he had heard everything that just happened. If he did, though, he didn’t let on.

“Can I join you?” The lustful look Damien had worn earlier in the night had been replaced with his usual playful grin. I nodded in response, unable to resist smiling back.

We trudged upstairs, but instead of leading me to the bathroom in the hallway that I had been using, Damien led me to his bedroom. I hadn’t seen it yet; The door was always closed, and we had spent all our time together so far in the living room or kitchen. I had been curious about what his room might look like but hadn’t wanted to pry.

It was surprisingly clean and cozy, like something I would expect to see in the winter edition of a home magazine. The walls were a soft cream color, and the bed was covered with a midnight blue comforter. Soft, warm lighting cast a glow about the room, and I noticed some unlit candles scattered around. Dark wooden shelves lined one wall, the tops of them reaching just under the windowsill. Various knick-knacks were scattered along each one; there were a couple rows of books, DVDs, CDs, board games, and video games, but there were also figurines and plants. I wanted to sit there and look through every item on the shelves, to get to know him better through the little odds-and-ends, but Damien pulled my hand into a bathroom that was adjoined to his bedroom.

Hot steam curled through the room as I undressed. I stepped through the sliding glass door of the large shower, which had two showerheads, one on either side. Damien stepped out of his pants and followed.

“Nice shower,” I said. “Very fancy.”

He shrugged and dipped his head backward into the water. “Yeah, I had this put in when we bought the place. The old one was half this size. I practically had to squeeze into it.”

“It must be nice to do that sort of thing on a whim. The one at my apartment has about as much water pressure as a toy squirt gun. Maybe I need to get you to replace mine for me,” I teased.

He forced a smile that was anything but genuine and said nothing.

“What?” I asked.

“What?” He repeated.

“You’re acting weird. I didn’t mean to offend you; It was just a joke.”

“Yeah, sorry.” He shrugged.

“Alright, what’s your deal?”

“What do you mean?”

“Every time it’s mentioned that you having a nice house or money you start acting weird and avoidant. Does it make you uncomfortable or something? Because if it bothers you, I’ll stop.
